Spyware: What are the Current Threats to Watch For?

With the number of spyware threats on the rise it is important to know what the most current threats are. Not doing this could result in more difficulties with the operation of your valued computer.

Virtumonde

Virtumonde is a spyware threat that forces ads to be displayed on the computer from third parties. Unfortunately, the ads appear as unwanted pop-up windows and contain links that may be automatically opened by the Windows operating system. The risks of this type of spyware are very high as this spyware can make changes to your operating system which are very difficult to remedy. It is also possible that some of the third party ads will track any internet or activities the computer user initiates.

Zango

Zango also acts in the same way as Virtumonde but the threat level is not as elevated. The risk with Zango is that software programs are installed without the knowledge or approval of the computer user. The software program may be dangerous to your computer.

Hotbar

Hotbar is a threat that comes in the form of a toolbar that runs with your internet browser. This is a search feature that displays ads from companies who have paid for this service. Also, pages with the relevant information related to the keyword will be displayed. The intent behind this is not necessarily to do harm, but your activities are being recorded and tracked. Unfortunately, this toolbar could also download other software programs that may be potentially damaging to the computer.

Generic Trojan Downloader

A Generic Trojan Downloader installs malicious programs designed to deliberately destroy the computer and all files. This is one of the most dangerous types of spyware that could infect a computer; therefore the threat is extremely high. Programs are packaged as a viable program with perceived benefits when in fact, the intent is quite the opposite, and a malicious program gets installed without permission. Security issues and software are turned off or changed to allow access to your computer drive and potentially sensitive information. This type of spyware increases the threat with other components and downloads and causes a domino effect with one program after the other being installed on your system.

C2.Lop

C2.Lop is a hijacker that automatically changes your internet browser settings. Typically, these programs do this without the knowledge or request of the computer owner. These settings include, but are not limited to, your home page, default search provider, screensaver, desktop defaults, and more. Frequently, the default home page is changed to open the creator’s website. The hijacker is used to generate income from paid ads that are clicked on, similar to Adsense.Unwanted plug-ins may also be installed to work with the browser installed and quite possibly record internet usage to be transferred to an information hub where the information is used by others.

Rootkit

A Rootkit is a program that resides in the system and avoids being found by rudimentary anti-spyware software. This type of threat is incorporated within malware (malicious software) and overtakes your computer system.

Rogue Security System/Rogue Anti-Spyware

This threat poses as a reliable source to scan your computer for viruses and/or spyware but does not offer what is promised. They may play on the fears of uneducated users to get a quick profit. These programs can even do the opposite of what they say and actually install more spyware.

This last category of spyware can cause much confusion for the computer user wanting to protect themselves. It’s clear that the use of an advanced anti-spyware program is essential to the safe operation of your computer. Anti-spyware software will scan your computer for threats and destroy any spyware in existence; it will then regularly monitor and defend you from online dangers. But, with the presence of rogue anti-spyware and dozens of programs being promoted, but it’s extremely important to do your homework. The anti-spyware software you choose should be proven effective by both experts and computer users. It is important that your program continually updates itself to stay on top of current threats.
